RESUMO

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the inductive effect of a combination of propolis and BBG extract on RUNX2 and ALP expression in the tooth extraction sockets of Cavia cobaya. Fifty- six Cavia cobaya were divided into four groups: polyethylene glycol (PEG), propolis extract + PEG, BBG + PEG, and propolis extract + BBG + PEG. The lower left incisor was extracted, and the socket subsequently filled with material according to the specific group of which the subject was a member. The subjects were sacrificed on the 14th and 30th days. Immunohistochemical staining was carried out under a light microscope at 400x magnification. Statistical analysis was then carried out by means of One-Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests. The mean number of RUNX2 and ALP expressions in each group was significantly different. The highest number of RUNX2 and ALP expressions occurred in the propolis + BBG + PEG group on the 30th day, while the lowest expressions were observed in the control group on the 14th day. A combination of propolis and BBG extract at a concentration of 2% of active substance effectively increases the expression of RUNX2 and ALP in preserving the tooth extraction sockets of Cavia cobaya.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Low levels of estrogen can cause osteoporosis and usually occur during a woman's menopausal phase. Osteoporosis can lead to bone resorption, the absence of osseointegration, and implant failure. The aim of this study is to determine the expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-ß1), runt-related transcription factor (RUNX2), and osteoblasts in mandibular rats with low levels of estrogen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is an in vivo experimental research. Female Wistar rats (n = 18) were divided into two groups: (1) Postsham surgery and (2) ovariectomy group. After 12 weeks, the rats were sacrificed to identify the level of estrogen, while histological analysis was conducted to determine the level of osteoblast and the expression of TGF-ß1 and RUNX2. The data were analyzed using t-test (P < 0.05). RESULTS: There were significant lower levels of estrogen and osteoblast among the ovariectomy group compared to the postsham group (P < 0.05). RUNX2 levels were found to be significantly higher in the ovariectomy group than that in the postsham group (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences between TGF-ß1 levels within the ovariectomy and postsham groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Ovariectomy can lead to decreased osteoblastogenesis in mandibular bone by the reduced level of osteoblast and the increased expression of TGF-ß1 and RUNX2.

RESUMO

@#A 62-year-old female patient came to the Dental Hospital of Universitas Airlangga to maintain her remaining teeth and make dentures for the missing teeth, and expressed that she expected a high aesthetic result. The patient had lost bilateral posterior mandibular teeth, resulting in unstable occlusion. To stabilize the occlusion, this patient was treated by temporary denture. After 3 months of follow up and confirmed adaptation with the new occlusion, prosthodontic treatment was done consisting of bilateral attachment retained mandibular removable partial denture, aimed at the patient’s expectation of acquiring good aesthetic results and functional rehabilitation.
